On February 24, 2020, the Audie L Murphy Memorial VA Hospital became the first VA Hospital in the nation to be honored and designated a Military Order of the Purple Heart Hospital. Additionally, the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, to which the hospital belongs, became the third system in the nation to be honored with the Purple Heart designation.

The hospital and health care system earned the Purple Heart designation by providing outstanding medical care to Purple Heart recipients and veterans. This award is the result of the patients scoring the hospital and system as excellent and exceeding expectations, as well as its outstanding staff exceeding required metrics.

“Congrats to the Audie L. Murphy South Texas VA Hospital and VA South Texas Health Care System on being recognized with a Purple Heart Designation. It was my pleasure to represent the Texas Veteran Commission at their ceremony,” said Koerner.
