Reinventing self into new career

When 67-year-old U.S. Army veteran Kurt Vogel, pictured at right, was laid off from a Human Resource position over a year ago, he decided to reinvent himself and seek a new career field. In doing so, Vogel activated his profile in the Work in Texas (WIT) system. That got him a letter of introduction from Air Force veteran and Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Rural Veteran Career Advisor Danny Wyatt, pictured at left.

“As part of his daily routine, Danny sends an email of introduction to all veterans who activate or reactivate their profiles within the Work in Texas (WIT) system,” said Ron Abrams, TVC Veteran Employment Services North Texas District Outreach Coordinator and Army veteran. “In his email, Danny included information on a training facility called, NPower; located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It offers tuition-free Information Technology training and certifications to veterans and their spouses. Furthermore, NPower courses have paid internships, with 80% of their graduates successfully obtaining employment”

Vogel had been laid off and had no certifications. He had been unemployed and seeking a job for just over a year.

“Mr. Vogel recognized the possible rewards (of NPower training and certification) and enrolled immediately, experiencing great results. So much so, he was offered a position at one of the nation’s largest banks,” said Abrams, pictured. “Great job Danny!”

“It sounded too good to be true, but this program is completely for real. Thanks for sending the email, and please do not hesitate to recommend NPower to other veterans and their spouses,” Vogel told Wyatt “I am making a shockingly high salary even as an entry-level employee. And now I have a new career starting less than a month before I turn 67 years old.”

TVC supports NPower training with Funds for Veterans’ Assistance grants. In May 2022, NPower was awarded a $300,000 General Assistance Grant for their veteran employment support.
