Newly Hired & Quickly Promoted, Employment Event Pays Off for Navy Veteran

While assisting an Off Base Transitional Training (OBTT) event in March at Fort Worth, Lee Ware, Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Veteran Employment Liaison (VEL) and Army veteran, happened to meet veteran Bruce Banner. He was Honorably Discharged from the Navy in 1998, had service connected conditions and was unemployed.

Two women veterans in San Antonio received refurbished vehicles from the National Autobody Council’s (NABC) Recycled Rides Program.

Women Veterans Day, June 12, celebrates anniversary of women becoming permanent members of military

AUSTIN, TX – June 12th is Women Veterans Day, commemorating the day President Harry Truman signed the bill enabling women to serve as permanent, regular members of U.S. Armed Forces, on June 12, 1948.

Prior to the enactment of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act in 1948, women serving in the military could enlist as volunteers in clerical positions or work as nurses, and in special, temporary units such as Women’s Army Corps full army status during WWII.

A Harlingen area Army veteran who served in Vietnam and Germany from Nov. 13, 1967 through Nov. 1, 1970 came to the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) to file his initial Claim on May 1, 2013. “His Claim was for exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam,” said TVC Claims Benefit Advisor (CBA) and Army veteran Rene Coronado. “It was originally denied because the PACT Act was not yet in effect.”
