Governor Abbott announces winners of Texas Veterans Commission’s Veteran Education Excellence Awards

October 5, 2020 – Governor Greg Abbott today congratulated the Texas public institutions of higher education honored with the 2022 Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award by the Texas Veterans Commission’s (TVC) Veterans Education Program. Established by the Texas legislature, the award recognizes universities and colleges providing excellence in education and related services that significantly contribute to the academic success of student veterans and military-connected students.

Health Care Advocacy resolves 11,300 cases, saves veterans over $709,000

During Fiscal Year 2021-2022, from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022, the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Health Care Advocacy Department (HCAD) closed over 11,300 cases in which a veteran came to them with a medical issue and HCAD resolved it or connected the veteran with a “warm handoff” to someone who did. Additionally, HCAD saved veterans a combined total of over $709,000 by resolving issues with VHA (Veterans Health Administration) and non-VHA billings.

Over $1.8 million in grants presented to 7 West Texas area veteran service organizations

On September 13, 2022, the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) presented $1,850,000 in grants to seven organizations for providing services to approximately 1,800 veterans in the FVA West Region. The presentation was made by TVC Commissioner and Marine Corps veteran Mike Hernandez at the El Paso County Commissioners Courtroom, 500 E. San Antonio, El Paso, Texas.

Helping veterans means getting out & about for Tina Jones

Tina Jones gets out and about to help veterans in Wichita County. As Wichita County Veterans Service Officer, she’s helped veterans with housing, food, counseling, even delivering older veterans taxes to the upper story of the courthouse. She does all this in addition to the work of filing Claims. “Sometimes we even make a house call and visit the nursing homes veterans are in. We help out any way we can,” said Jones.

Employment Strategy Session held with new Bexar County Military and Veterans Service Center Director

A new Bexar County Military and Veterans Service Center Director is scheduled to come onboard in September 2022. LTC Keith Wilson is slated for the directorship upon his retirement from U.S. Army Soldier for Life, Regional Director for South U.S., Northeast U.S. and Europe. In preparation for his new role, a veteran employment strategy session introduced Wilson to area employment partners at the federal, state and city levels; as well as private enterprise and nonprofits serving veterans.

On September 12, 2022, the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) presented $2,805,000 in grants to eight organizations for providing services to approximately 1,500 veterans in the FVA Panhandle Region*.
